Reasoning about Body-Parts Relations for Sign Language Recognition

چکیده
Over the years, hand gesture recognition has been mostly addressed considering hand trajectories in isolation. However, in most sign languages, hand gestures are defined on a particular context (body region). We propose a pipeline to perform sign language recognition which models hand movements in the context of other parts of the body captured in the 3D space using the MS Kinect sensor. In addition, we perform sign recognition based on the different hand postures that occur during a sign. Our experiments show that considering different body parts brings improved performance when compared to other methods which only consider global hand trajectories. Finally, we demonstrate that the combination of hand postures features with hand gestures features helps to improve the prediction of a

Appearance-Based Features for Automatic Continuous Sign Language Recognition
This diploma thesis investigates appearance-based features for the person-independent vision-based recognition of continuous sign language. A large variety of methods which have been successfully used for automatic speech recognition is applied to this task. Appearance-based approaches do not rely on a segmentation of the images or on predefined models of the image content and use the image its...
متن کاملSign Language Recognition with Kinect
A framework for general gesture recognition is presented and tested with isolated signs of sign language. Other than common systems for sign language recognition, this framework makes use of Kinect, a depth camera developed by Microsoft and PrimeSense, which features easy extraction of important body parts. Recognition is done using hidden Markov models with a continuous observation density. Th...
متن کاملVisual Modeling and Feature Adaptation in Sign Language Recognition
We propose a tracking adaptation to recover from early tracking errors in sign language recognition by optimizing the obtained tracking paths w.r.t. the hypothesized word sequences of an automatic sign language recognition system. Hand or head tracking is usually only optimized according to a tracking criterion. As a consequence, methods which depend on accurate detection and tracking of body p...
متن کاملA Treatment of Plurals based on a Theory
Collective entities and collective relations play an important role in natural language. In order to capture the full meaning of sentences like \The Beatles sing`Yesterday' ", a knowledge representation language should be able to express and reason about plural entities { like \the Beatles" { and their relationships { like \sing" { with any possible reading (cumulative, distributive or collecti...
متن کاملThe development of analogical reasoning in deaf children and their parents' communication mode.
The purpose of this article is to analyze the results of a study of the development of analogical reasoning in deaf children coming from two different linguistic environments (deaf children of deaf parents--sign language, deaf children of hearing parents--spoken language) and in hearing children, as well as to compare two groups of deaf children to a group of hearing children. In order to estim...
